Decline in local authority support leads to 60% rise in membership of national school support service

The Key, the national support service for school and college leaders, has seen a 60% increase in schools signing up in the last 12 months.

Between January 2010 and 2011, membership increased by 3492 school and college leaders.

Usage per school has also increased by 10% in the last 12 months.

Managing Director of The Key, Fergal Roche, said: “The sharp increase in members and usage we’ve seen makes sense in the prevailing economic climate.

“Where previously local authorities provided an all-encompassing support service to schools and colleges, this is no longer the case. The number of local advisors has been reduced nationwide. The Key helps to fill the gap by providing a national hub for expert information and guidance for school and college leaders.

“It’s more cost effective to provide this type of support on a national basis than having a duplicate service in every local authority in the country.”
